The origins of holidays and observances are often very different than you might expect. But in the case of Sweetest Day, its humble beginnings come from one of the very sweetest things you can do - give candy to someone who is having a rough time.
In the early 1900's, a group of candy executives got together and donated approximately 26,000 boxes of chocolates and other sweet treats to widows, orphans, and shut-ins. The publicity stunt was presented as a new yearly event, but cynics noted that it was little more than the companies looking to establish a new holiday which benefited their pocketbooks. Regardless of intentions, the Sweetest Day is still observed over 100 years later, especially in the Midwest and Northeast. However, the modern version entails doing anything nice for someone who may need support and encouragement. Blossom Flowers Shops has the flowers, candy & gift ideas you'll need to lift their spirits. Read More about Sweet Gestures on Sweetest Day »

It is estimated that we spend between 25% and 35% of love's waking hours working. With such a large portion of our existence involving the workplace, it is easy to see why a great boss can make such a huge difference. In 1958, Chicago State Farm Insurance employee Patricia Bays Haroski was so inspired by her boss that she petitioned the government to set aside October 16 (her dad's birthday) as a day to recognize supervisors and employers who were doing a great job; in 1962, Illinois governor Otto Kerner made it official.

Experts estimate that this year, nearly 50 million people will relocate to a new residence. That means that many more people will have new neighbors as well! If someone new recently settled into your neighborhood, you may want to make them feel at home with a friendly smile and a beautiful gift from Blossom Flower Shops.
Interesting Trivia: Housewarming gifts are so named because, in the days before electricity, a family moving into a new home would receive armloads of firewood from friends and neighbors, in order to keep their house warm through the winter. Read More about Flowers & Plants for Housewarming Gifts »

Grandparents Day is September 10 and was originally the idea of a woman named Marian McQuade. A mother and grandmother herself, Marian didn't envision a commercial holiday, rather she thought that a day to bring the generations together would allow us to share stories, impart wisdom and teach history. It was also an opportunity for younger generations to show respect, love, and gratitude to their families. Blossom Flower Shops appreciates the idea of bringing people together and celebrating family, and have the perfect Grandparents Day flowers for the occasion.
