Mother’s Day is approaching. This observance became a national holiday in 1914 after President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill making the second Sunday of May, the official National Mother’s Day holiday. The idea for a national holiday to honor mothers began with Julia Ward Howe, the woman who wrote the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, in 1872. Nevertheless, her efforts didn’t produce a governmental proclamation declaring the holiday. The woman who championed efforts to make this day a reality was Anna Jarvis.
