Flowers for Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday is the equivalent of Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. In 2017, the holiday falls on March 26.

For centuries, Mothering Sunday stood as an opportunity for people to return home to their ‘mother’ church – the church they grew up in – on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent.  The day often doubled as a family reunion and a chance for children working away from their homes to spend time with their mothers. Traditionally, the children would pick flowers along the way to church to present to their moms at the service. This was the start of giving flowers on this special day.

Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday is a day to honor mothers, as well as other female mentors and role models such as grandmothers, stepmothers, and mothers-in-law. Common Mothering Sunday gifts are similar to most holidays, with cakes, flowers, chocolates, and jewelry topping the list of popular offerings. If people are able to visit, they often choose to treat their mother or grandmother to a special meal or fun outing. For those who cannot be with their mother, sending cards and flowers is the customary action.
