Father’s Day is observed on the third Sunday of June each year, and affords each of us the chance to celebrate the funniest, sweetest, most caring, smartest and hardest working Dad in the world – our own! And although most fathers will tell you that they don’t need any accolades, we think it is important to recognize the men who have made such a significant impact on our lives. In order to help to honor these amazing guys, Blossom Flower Shops would like to offer a few fun facts that you may find interesting.* Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired to establish Father’s Day in honor of her father, William Smart. Smart was a single dad who raised 6 children on his own, and daughter Sonora felt he – and other men like him – deserved a day similar to Mother’s Day to honor them.
* The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington in 1910. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson declared it an official holiday, and Richard Nixon gave the holiday a permanent spot on the calendar in 1972.
* According to the latest census, there are more than 71 million fathers in the United States, with 200,000 of those being stay-at-home dads. Just under 2 million fathers are single dads.
* According to Hallmark, 74 million cards are purchased and given each Father’s Day, making Dad’s Day the 4th largest card giving day of the year.
* The most common gifts on Father’s Day include clothing, tools, electronic gadgets, and sporting goods.
One of our favorite Father’s Day plants is seen above. The money tree – or Pachira – is believed to bring good luck, and is a thoughtful gift for any home or office.
